The stage production and performance of Charumati, a historical drama, was a great success with its grand design and audacious execution. The cast was diverse, ex mayor of Kathmandu Mr Keshav Sthapit was in the role of Samrat Ashoka, celebrated theatre artist Ms Aruna Karki was in the role of Ashoka’s queen, celebrated film actress Ms Keki Adhikari was in the role of Charumati. Similarly, other actors were Rajkumar Pudasaini, Bholaraj Sapkota, Subash Thapa, Deshbhakta Khanal, Puskar Gurung etc who are well known theatre and film artists. The play was designed and directed by Bimal Subedi, a theatre graduate from National School of Drama, New Delhi. We are also planning to perform it in a couple of cities India.

It had a grand opening which was in itself was a historical moment in the history of Nepal Theatre for Rt. Honourable the President of Nepal Dr. Ram Baran Yadav inaugurated the show amongst VVIPs like Mr. Ranjit Rae, the Ambassador of India to Nepal; Mr Jhalanath Khanal, the president of the CPNUML, Mr Surya Bahadur Thapa, Mr. Pashupati Sumsher Rana, The Chief of the Army Staffs; The Chief of the Armed Police Force; diplomats from the various embassies in Nepal; and very high profiled government officials, corporate people and media personalities.

The play was well appreciated and has been covered by almost all major media houses in Kathmandu. As an overall impact it created a theatrical ambience that ignited to look into the historical fact of the Emperor Ashoka’s visit to Kathmandu.
